One of the unique challenges we had to deal with while Jimmy was struggling with his eczema rash and itch was preventing him from scratching himself bloody.
The trickiest times were while he was sleeping and when I was driving. I started by just putting baby socks over his hands during the day and swaddling him tight at night. The socks worked in the beginning but after lots of rubbing he would essentially give himself a rug burn. Once he was about 3 months old he could break out of any swaddle or he would just use the swaddle to itch his arms by rubbing them. At that point he had also figured out how to bite down on the sock and pull it off his hand. I had to give him credit for his creativity! Typically, I sleep next to him and keep his arms down with my hand. However, sometimes I don't wake quick enough when one of his hands escapes! In the car, when Jimmy was younger, I would tuck a blanket around him after he was buckled which would keep his arms pinned down. As he got bigger he was able to break out of the blankets.
I also had the hardest time finding good quality clothes that had the fold over mitts built into the sleeves larger than 0-3 months. After lots of searching and online shopping (a.k.a. retail therapy), here are some of my favorite products.
The absolute best product I found for the car was the Anna & Eve swaddle wrap. This allowed me to buckle Jimmy in correctly and then swaddle his arms down over his straps. I pretty much cried from relief when I found this product.
Our go-to outfits are PARADE Organics. They use certified GOTS organic material and they are on the thicker/warmer side, perfect for our New England winters! They also have two way zippers (something I didn't know I needed... now I will never go back to one way zippers!) and the fold over hands and feet go up to size 6-12 months.
We also have a ton of Little Sleepies "zippies" outfits. They use bamboo material (buttery soft!!). Their fold over hands and feet go up to 12-18 months and also have two way zippers. I may or may not have several sets of matching jammies for Ellie and Jimmy..........
We have tried so many different brands and styles and these are just a couple of our favorites. What are your favorite things to help protect your littles from scratching themselves?
